Excellent Signing

A physically strong post defender who can give the team some minutes against bigger front-lines. Collins did a very nice job on Dwight Howard for Atlanta in the last couple of years.

Not as strong a rebounder as a Jamaal Magloire or an Eric Dampier but has better feet, em, more mobility, defensively. Two players I was hoping Danny Ainge was targeting for that third string center role. So Boston lose some rebounding to gain some more defensive range with Jason Collins over either of them.

Replacement for Stiemsma?

I don’t think Collins is a replacement for Stiemsma. Collins isn’t a rotation player. Not a primary backup center. Collins is just a third string quality center …  someone who offers a very specific and useful skill-set.

I think there is still a good chance that Danny will continue to pursue a primary backup center in the free agent marketplace. Probably someone like Chris Andersen or perhaps Darko Milicic.

Or, it may signal that Boston do not intend to bring in a (defensive anchor type) backup center and are instead intent on going small with Sullinger / Wilcox as their primary backup center … with Jason Collins as a third stringer whom they can call upon when they need some more size in certain difficult situations.

We’ll have to wait and see but I absolutely do not expect J.Collins to be anything more than a third string center for Boston. Not a Stiemsma replacement.
