Analysis

Huge news for the rest of the Eastern Conference. Completely changes the playoff picture.

  • Boston’s chances, in particular, suddenly look much improved. They should beat Atlanta in the first round and either Chicago or Philly in the second round to make the Eastern Conference Finals where they will likely meet up with the Miami Heat. That would be an absolutely terrific series. The Celtics have looked very good against Miami since going small with Garnett at center and look a very real threat to knock the Heat off their perch.
  • Philadelphia too. They should feel much better about their chances of taking down Chicago in the first round. Especially if Doug Collins smartens up and gets Lavoy Allen the hell out of that starting lineup.
  • As for Chicago, they are still a good solid playoff caliber team even without Derrick Rose. They can maintain their elite defense and elite rebounding. Their offense, however, will take a big dip. A lot more pressure on Boozer, Deng and Rip Hamilton as well their point guards CJ Watson and Co. They still have a good chance of winning the first round and should give Boston a tough test in the second round — in large part due to their tremendous rebounding vs Boston’s very weak board work — but I believe Boston will always have that extra gear to create some separation and win the series when it matters.
  • Terrible news for Chicago obviously. Not just in terms of the immediate implications but this is a very serious injury to their franchise star player Derrick Rose. A player who’s game is very reliant on his elite athleticism and explosiveness. Players have been recovering much better from these injuries over the last 10+ years than in the past but it is still a career threatening (and frightening) injury. Hopefully, Rose can make a full recovery and get back to his MVP best when he returns.

  1. Shumpert tore his ACL in one of today’s games too. Same knee. Strange coincidence.
