Kobe and Durant Battle for Scoring Title

In Awards/Achievement on April 23, 2012 at 2:55 pm

So after yesterday’s game between the Thunder and Lakers, Kevin Durant (35 points) has moved ahead of Kobe Bryant (26 points) in the scoring charts by a score of 27.91 points per game to 27.86 points per game for Kobe.

I am rooting for Kobe to go on a two game binge here and bring home his third scoring title. This year will very likely be his last opportunity to win one and would make him the second oldest scoring champ behind Michael Jordan.

As for Durant, if he won, this would make three in a row for him. Three scoring titles would tie him 5th All-Time for leading the league in scoring per game behind Michael Jordan (10 times), Wilt Chamberlain (7 times) with George Gervin (4 times) and Allen Iverson (also 4 times) tied in third place.

To accomplish this by the age of 23 is absolutely extraordinary. To think that Durant has another 8-12 years of competing in this category and will almost definitely rack a bunch of these things … just wow. I can’t think of anything else. Amazing.

I love it when the scoring title comes down to the last games of the season. Something to watch.

Hopefully, we’ll see a David Robinson type explosion (71 points) or even better an epic battle between two guys gunning for the title like David Thompson (73 points) and George Gervin (63 points) had back in the day.

  1. So Durant came up with back-to-back 32 point performances to give him 1850 points for the season and an average of 28.03 points per game.

Kobe is on 1616 in 58 contests for an average of 27.86ppg with one game left to play. He would need at least 38 points to inch past Durant (28.034 to 28.030).

Lakers final game is against the Sacramento Kings. One of the worst defensive teams in the league (3rd worst in defensive efficiency). Their starting two guard, Marcus Thornton, is a a weak defensive player. Tyreke Evans may switch over on Kobe. He is solid enough but won’t receive enough help (team defense) elsewhere. Looks like an ideal team to play against to go on a scoring binge.

Could be a fun final day for the scoring title.
