The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to terms with free agent forward Yi Jianlian on a one-year deal, a league source told SI.com.
Yi, 24, averaged 5.6 points and 3.9 rebounds with Washington last season. His best season came in 2009-2010 when Yi averaged 12.0 points and 7.2 rebounds with New Jersey.
ESPN first reported the deal.
I think Yi is a solid risk for the minimum as a third string power forward. He still has an interesting mix of physical attributes and basic skill-set that if he can further develop, Yi could become a valuable NBA player. Big “if” obviously. But a worthy risk for the money and responsibility level (third string, 13th-15th man on roster).
However, I don’t like taking a risk on both Yi and Brandan Wright. Pick one and try to develop that one. Otherwise, they’ll get in one another’s way.
