The Charlotte Bobcats have decided not to match the Memphis Grizzlies’ offer sheet to restricted free agent forward Dante Cunningham, player personnel chief Rod Higgins told the Observer this morning.
Matching Memphis’ offer sheet would have obligated the Bobcats to more than $4 million in guaranteed money total this season and next.
Solid signing for the Grizzlies
- I rate D.Cunningham as a high level third string combo forward or a low level rotation reserve player.
- As such, I would rate him at a minimum contract. So I think the Grizzlies overpaid here but it’s only a three year deal and only the first two are guaranteed and it’s not for much money. So not too big of a deal. Slightly overpaid, let’s say.
- On short notice, adding Cunningham was a great move to reinforce the Grizzlies suddenly shaky depth at PF with Darrel Arthur being ruled out with injury.
As for the Bobcats, I thought they made the right move not matching the offer. Best to keep as much cap flexibility as possible given their current situation.
