Marc Stein reports
The Dallas Mavericks are in the process of finalizing the signing of former New Jersey Nets first-round draft pick Sean Williams to bolster their frontcourt rotation, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.
After securing his release from Israeli club Maccabi Haifa over the weekend, Williams is scheduled to arrive in Dallas in time to complete his physical and join the team Wednesday after the Mavericks’ preseason finale in Oklahoma City.
Sources said that the Mavericks plan to sign the shot-blocker to a two-year deal with only a partial guarantee for the second season.
Good signing. Nice low risk, high reward opportunity.
I think Dallas is a solid home for Sean Williams. Rick Carlisle is an excellent coach for Williams to work with + Williams could combine well with Dirk Nowitzki and Lamar Odom in small-ball lineups.
That said, my first choice destinations for Sean Williams would have been somewhere with a highly skilled offensive center who can free Sean Williams up to play the four and live with his limited offensive repertoire. Such as:
- San Antonio to play with Tim Duncan
- A return to New Jersey to play with Brook Lopez
- Perhaps Memphis with Marc Gasol and a coach in Lionel Hollins who loves guys who can force turnovers.
Dallas sort of qualifies with Dirk Nowitzki and Lamar Odom. More a small-ball type configuration than a power lineup that they could have built with Williams alongside a more prototypical five.
I think Dallas should discard Brandan Wright and concentrate on Sean Williams. Too difficult to develop both at the same position at the same time. I have more confidence in Willilams’ potential as an NBA player than B.Wright (why I choose S.Williams over B-Wright).
