The Toronto Raptors announced Wednesday they have signed forward Gary Forbes after the Denver Nuggets chose to not match Toronto’s offer sheet for the restricted free agent. It is reportedly a three-year deal, with a team option on the third year.
The Raptors signed Forbes to an offer sheet Saturday. Under the terms of the NBA’s new Collective Bargaining Agreement, beginning Sunday the Nuggets had three days to match the Raptors’ offer.
Forbes, 6-foot-7, 220 pounds, averaged 5.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 12.6 minutes in 63 games during his rookie campaign last season with the Nuggets. He started 11 contests, where he averaged 9.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 22.8 minutes.
No word on the financials yet but I presume it’s a near-minimum contract. Probably around $1.5 million per annum.
Gary Forbes had a good rookie campaign. Showed himself to be a very good athlete with great size for the two position and enough size to play some small forward too. Forbes was an effective defensive player and rebounder at the two spot. Offensively, very much a work in progress.
Some similarities to the Sonny Weems acquisition two years ago. Forbes seems to play within his limitations a bit better than Weems did though but also may not be quite as dynamic a player.
