The defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks have filled out their 15-man roster by agreeing to a one-year deal with guard Delonte West, a source said.
West, 28, has started 225 games for four teams during his seven-year NBA career and can play either guard position. He was limited to 24 games for the Boston Celtics last season because of a wrist injury.
West, a full-time starter for a 66-win Cleveland team a few seasons ago, will play for the veteran’s minimum.
Big fan of Delonte West. Very good role player.
He can play either backcourt position well. A good defender at either spot. An above average rebounder at the point. An adequate ball-handler, slasher, floor general and passer for the point guard position. An above average one for the two. A very good outside shooter who is a very efficient complementary scorer. Nice glue guy.
A steal for the veteran’s minimum. The reason he was available for that price are his off the court issues and his injury proneness.
I expect the Mavericks thinking here was that Delonte West was a good complement to Jason Terry. A guard big enough to defend the two to avoid Terry being punished by bigger players + an able enough PG to allow Terry to fully concentrate on his duties as a scorer.
