Aaron Gray has agreed to a one-year deal with Toronto Raptors, league source tells Y! Sports.
Still awaiting confirmation on financials but it is expected to be worth around $2.5 million.
Aaron Gray is coming off a brilliant playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers which has over-inflated his value and reputation heading into this free agency period. A one year $2.5 million deal isn’t too bad. To be honest, I was expecting a lot worse. Something like a multi-year deal worth anywhere from $10-20 million over four years. So Toronto are fine financially. It’s a little high but it’s only a one year contract so there are no issues there.
Aaron Gray is a top notch third string center in the NBA. He can also fill in as a serviceable but below average primary backup center.
Gray’s best qualities are all on the offensive end where he has excellent size, bulk (7-0, 270lbs) and hands for a center. He understands positioning offensively and moves well around the basket and cutting to the basket where he is a strong finisher. Strictly a complementary offensive weapon who should be a fourth or fifth option. Gray also has a few post moves which are a good weapon in small doses.
Unfortunately, Gray lacks quickness and is a sub-par defender. This flaw has held him back being a rotation regular in the past and will continue to do so in the future until he finds a way to be more effective as a defender. As a rebounder, Gray gives his team some quality board work.
Like I said, excellent third string center to serviceable primary backup center.
Very good addition to the Raptors. Aaron Gray will, along with Jamaal Magloire, give the Raptors coaching staff plenty of options in terms of depth, lineup flexibility and style of play. Nice signing.
