The Sun Sentinel reports
Miami Heat swingman Mike Miller sustained what appears to be a serious thumb injury on his right, shooting hand during Wednesday’s practice at AmericanAirlines Arena, a source close to the situation told the Sun Sentinel today.
He is scheduled to be examined by a hand specialist in South Florida later in the day.
“Obviously, he’s disappointed,” said teammate Udonis Haslem, who spoke Thursday with Miller. “He was so excited to be here and be a part of this. The good thing is it’s not season-ending, from what I’m hearing. So that’s a good sign.
“We look to get him back as soon as possible. He’s a big part of this team.”
Miller was injured when his thumb got tangled in a teammates’ jersey during a post-up drill.
“It was just a drill,” coach Erik Spoelstra said. “He got it caught in a jersey with some contact, on a post-up.”
Such an injury, even without surgery, can sideline a player for at least six weeks and potentially beyond two months.
Bad luck for Mike Miller and Miami.
Miller’s Health In General Terms
As an aside …
Mike Miller has looked very poor physically in pre-season. It looked like his athleticism was fading badly.
Miller was carrying a few knocks (small injuries) during those games but I wonder if that was all that was bothering him … or if his body is starting to break down.
It’s premature to say for sure but it’s certainly something worth keeping an eye on throughout the season.
