The New York Post reports

The Knicks last night were on the verge of signing 7-foot-1 Russian free-agent center Timofey Mozgov, according to a source. The anticipated three-year,

$9 million deal would eat up the rest of their cap space.

However, the Knicks are still waiting for clearance papers from FIBA and his Russian team, according to the source.

Knicks Looking To Trade

According to a person familiar with the Knicks’ thinking, the club will explore trading Wilson Chandler, possibly packaging him with the expiring contract of Eddy Curry. The Knicks would love to trade for a premier outside-shooting big man.

Thoughts On Signing

I don’t know anything about Mosgov so nothing of value to add here.

According to his draftexpress profile, Mosgov is an excellent athlete for a seven footer. He played under David Blatt in Russia, played very well, is a good rebounder and a good finisher around the rim. Defensively, he is a very good. Strong (physically) quality post defender and mobile/agile enough to step out and defend screen and rolls. Active shot-blocker.

Mosgov sounds like he’ll make a very good role player + garbage man in the NBA. He also sounds like the type of athlete who will thrive in D’Antoni’s uptempo game plan.

Update: The Painted Area has a very good breakdown on Mosgov — big fans of the signing.
