Raptors Sign Kleiza To Offer Sheet

Marc Spears reports via twitter (one and two)

Toronto signs Denver restricted free agent forward Linas Kleiza to a four-year, $20 million offer sheet, a league source tells Y! Sports.

Kleiza terminated contract with Greece Olympiacos Wednesday. The Nuggets, Kleiza’s former team before going to Greece, has 7 days to match.

Denver Nuggets

Tough to tell what Denver will do.

On one hand, they like Kleiza and would love to have him back. On the other hand, their owner has been frugal and reluctant to spend in recent seasons. The Nuggets probably have the green light to spend money on a big man but for a forward? Hmm … not sure.

Toronto Raptors

Similar to Jarrett Jack 12 months ago, this is a good player on a solid contract but the timing is wrong for the club.

Toronto should not be adding long term contracts to their payroll. Not for supporting cast members.

  • They need to create cap flexibility and rebuild properly. Develop their core and then round out their rotation.
  • Not round out their rotation, waste all their cap space, be mired in mediocrity and avoid high draft picks … and then have no way to add All-Star caliber core players.

Toronto are in the middle of nowhere right now. Far worse than it has been in recent seasons.

Raptors fans should be hoping that the Denver Nuggets match this offer.

  1. I agree… this move just stinks of MLSE/Colangelo trying to field a team that will win just enough games next year not to be an embarrassment (in their eyes). The proper course would be to write off next year completely and start positioning the roster for the long term, somewhat similar to what MIA has done the last few years. This isn’t such a bad deal, but (along with the Amir Johnson signing) this is another move that hurts flexibility. Ugh…

On another note, did you catch Hollinger’s article on ESPN that said that right now, JO might be the best option for the Heat to start alongside Bosh? LOL! he must have a very short memory…

  2. Scott G.,

I agree 100% with your sentiments … re: Kleiza and Jermaine O’Neal.
