Dallas Re-Up Haywood

Marc Spears reports

The Dallas Mavericks have reached agreement on a six-year, $55 million contract to re-sign center Brendan Haywood, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

Haywood came to Dallas in the middle of last season in a trade that also delivered Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson to the Mavericks. Haywood averaged 8.1 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks during 28 games for the Mavericks.

Thoughts

Wow, that is a long contract. If that was only a four year contract (for $36-40 million) that would be a fair deal for Dallas. But six years? They overpaid.

Perhaps they had to … but with LeBron heading to Miami I think they jumped the gun and gave away too much.

As for Haywood, I am very happy for him. He has had a difficult career with Eddie Jordan holding him back for all those years. Good to see him land in a great opportunity (Dallas) and get a major payday so late in his career (31 at the start of next season).

Conclusion

This is a good signing for Dallas but those fifth and sixth seasons are dodgy.

The Mavs need to make sure they take advantage of those first four seasons and give themselves a real chance at a title for this to be worthwhile. Something they are capable of doing and will try their utmost to make happen.
