Los Angeles Clippers Salaries

Contracts above $5 million

  • Baron Davis – $13 million
  • Chris Kaman – $11.8 million
  • Blake Griffin – $5.36 million

Baron Davis has three years left on his contract. Kaman has two years left on his deal while Blake Griffin will be beginning the second year of his rookie scale contract.

These three players total $30.16 million.

Rest Of Team’s Salaries

  • Eric Gordon – $3.02 million

This brings the Clippers total up to $33.18 million for four players.

Other Costs

  • Draft Picks — The Clippers have the #8 pick which comes with a cap hold of $2.14 million.
  • Non-Guaranteed Salary — DeAndre Jordan has a non-guaranteed contract of $850k. It’s very likely that this will be picked up so I’ll include it.
  • Open Roster Spots — The Clippers have six players on their books and hence six open roster spots carrying a cap hold of $2.85 million.

The additional costs here amount to $5.84 million.

That gives us a new total of $39.02 million.

The Cap

David Stern recently announced

NBA commissioner David Stern said on Friday that the league is projecting the cap to come in at about $56.1 million. The actual number won’t be determined until early July, before teams can begin officially signing players.

Though that figure would still be lower than this season’s $57.7 million cap, it’s far better than estimates from last summer, when the league sent a memo to teams warning them of a potential sharp drop to between $50.4 million to $53.6 million.

2010 Cap Space

The means the Los Angeles Clippers will have $17.08 million in cap space next offseason.

Summer Options

The Clippers have enough cap space to sign a max contract player outright.

  • Their first choice will be LeBron James but they may also have some interest in Wade (Gordon?) or Bosh (Griffin?).
  • The Clippers backup plan will be Rudy Gay or Joe Johnson.
  • The Clips are very unlikely to show any interest in Boozer or Amare Stoudemire … but they have some interest in David Lee if he was cheap enough ($9-10 million). Creating a three player big man rotation of Kaman, Griffin and Lee.
  • If each of those three plans falls through, the Clippers will then turn their attentions to the trade market looking to pickup a deal similar to the one they made for Marcus Camby two years ago.
  • And if that fails, the Clippers will turn their attention to some mid priced talent like Josh Childress.
