Odds On Overcoming Series Deficits

In General NBA on May 10, 2010 at 4:18 am

How many teams have come back from losing the first two games, three games or three of the first four games in a series?

Down 0-2

Only 14 of 228 teams who have gone down two games to none have come back to win the series.

That is a winning percentage of 94.9%.

It had happened just three times in 30 tries during the NBA Finals (1993 Chicago Bulls, 2006 Miami Heat, not sure on the third team).

Down 1-3

Only eight teams out of a total of 193 teams in NBA History have come back from a 3-1 series deficit.

That gives us a winning percentage of 95.85% for teams that go up 3-1.

  • 1968 Boston Celtics (vs Sixers?)
  • 1970 Los Angeles Lakers
  • 1979 Washington Bullets
  • 1981 Boston Celtics (vs Sixers)
  • 1995 Houston Rockets (vs Suns)
  • 1997 Miami Heat (vs Knicks)
  • 2003 Detroit Pistons (vs Magic)
  • 2006 Phoenix Suns (vs Lakers)

Down 0-3

No team has ever come back from an 0-3 deficit.

Other Notes

Game Seven

Home have won 84 out 103 contests. That is a winning percentage of 81.6%.

Game five winners, after a 2-2 tie, have won the series 83.1% of the time (154 opportunities).

  1. For Down 0-2, the 2006 finals comeback was against Dallas by the Heat, not by Dallas.
