Big Z States Intent To Rejoin Cavs

In Free Agency, General NBA on March 5, 2010 at 6:33 pm reports

He’s back. Or at least he wants to be.

In a move sure to delight Cavaliers fans, Zydrunas Ilgauskas has announced his intentions to rejoin the team and has asked agent Herb Rudoy to begin negotiations with the Cavs on March 22, the first date he can do so.

“It is Zydrunas’ desire to return to the Cavaliers if a suitable contract can be agreed upon,” Rudoy said in an e-mail to reporters. “He has been overwhelmed and deeply touched by the outpouring of support and affection by the fans and by his teammates. He hopes to return to bring a championship to the Cavaliers and to the city of Cleveland.”

Good soon-to-be signing for the Cavaliers. Not there was ever any doubt about Big Z’s return to Cleveland.

Cavs Big Man Depth

Cleveland will now have five rotation caliber big men and one solid deep reserve

  • PF/C — Anderson Varejao
  • Forward — Antawn Jamison
  • Center — Shaquille O’Neal
  • Center — Zydrunas Ilgauskas
  • Power Forward — JJ Hickson
  • PF/C — Darnell Jackson — deep reserve

Varejao and Jamison are both guaranteed playing time. Shaquille O’Neal will also be guaranteed playing time if healthy enough come playoff time.

Until Shaq returns, Ilgauskas will likely take over the starting center position with Jamison starting at the four and Varejao continuing in his role as sixth man with JJ Hickson filling in the leftover minutes.

Cleveland will move forward with the expectation that they will receive nothing from Shaquille on their playoff run in order to prepare fully should the big fella suffer a setback to his already late return date.

The Cavs depth up front makes it unlikely that LeBron sees any significant time at the four once Z joins the squad + even less playing time there once Shaq gets healthy.
