Thoughts On Trade

Chicago Bulls

This was always going to be Chicago’s second best option but in terms of being the second best option it was a good trade. They got a first round draft pick for Thomas which was as much as could have been gotten.

I’m still waiting to hear on what year the pick is due + what level of protection it has but it’ll likely be a late lottery to mid-first round pick. A valuable pick.

The best option for Chicago was to trade Hinrich’s contract and re-sign Thomas in the summer.

Charlotte Bobcats

Excellent trade for the Bobcats. They gained a good young player in Tyrus Thomas who has very impressive potential. A player who can be a key contributor today and long into the future.

It is well worth giving up a first round pick for this type of talent.

Big Men — Tyson Chandler + Boris Diaw + Tyrus Thomas + Nazr Mohammed + DeSagana Diop + Theo Ratliff + Alexis Ajinca

Wings — Gerald Wallace + Stephen Jackson + Derrick Brown + Stephen Graham

Guards — Raymond Felton + DJ Augustin

The Bobcats have seven big men and only four wings + two guards. More big men than perimeter players.

Both Boris Diaw and Tyrus Thomas are capable of giving some minutes at small forward if necessary though … but Charlotte has been going smaller for most of the season by playing Diaw at center and Wallace at power forward in order to keep their offense working at a serviceable level.

The Bobcats will look to acquire a third string point guard in free agency and will be opportunistic if any quality wings become available through buyouts. The Bobcats need a rotation caliber wing. Someone who can be the first wing off the bench. So we’re talking about a fairly talented player for a buyout.

The Bobcats look a scary opponent in the first round. Very tough defensively and will work their socks off. A difficult opponent.

Link: Article’s headline says Bulls get back on right track by admitting failures by trading Thomas — bad commentary but it has some interesting quotes/notes and is reflective of many Bulls’ fans feelings regarding Ty Thomas.

Update: More on the draft pick

Forman said on “The Afternoon Saloon” on ESPN 1000 that the first year for the pick would be 2012, and it would be lottery protected that year. Forman said the protection would decrease each year after that for “four or five years.”
