RealGM reports

Hawks forward Josh Smith became the youngest player to reach 1,000 blocks for his career on Tuesday night.Smith recorded his 1,000th block with 8:29 left in the first quarter of Atlanta’s loss to Oklahoma City when he rejected a shot by Nenad Krstic.

He reached 1,000 blocks at the age of 24 years and 59 days, more than a year younger than the previous record-holder, Benoit Benjamin.

Interesting …

Does Josh Smith stand a chance of becoming the All-Time leader in blocked shots?

Top 10 All-Time

#10 – Robert Parish –  2,361 blocks
#9 – Tree Rollins – 2,541 blocks
#8 – Shaquille O’Neal – 2,678 blocks
#7 – Patrick Ewing – 2,894 blocks
#6 – David Robinson – 2,954 blocks
#5 – Mark Eaton – 3,064 blocks
#4 – Artis Gilmore – 3,178 blocks
#3 – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – 3,189 blocks
#2 – Dikembe Mutombo – 3,289 blocks
#1 – Hakeem Olajuwon – 3,830 blocks

Josh Smith has blocked 1,000 shots (80th All-Time) in five and a half seasons. He has played 423 games, 14,1135 minutes, in that period. He has blocked an average of 2.4 shots per game in 33.4 minutes playing time per game.

Josh Smith turned 24 years old in December.

  • Let’s say he blocks two shots per game for the next decade. That would give him around 2,600 career rejections and place him 8th on the list.
  • If he managed to maintain that for two additional years, he’d rise to 6th.
  • If Smith only rejected 1.5 shots per game over the next ten years he’d rank 12th. Over a dozen years he’d rise to 9th.
  • If Smith played until he was 38 and featured in 90% of his career games he’d need to maintain his 2.4bpg career average to tie Hakeem Olajuwon for top spot.

Considering Josh Smith’s smaller size and reliance on athleticism, I think it’s unlikely that he’s able to maintain his blocks per game averages late into his career. So I don’t expect him to be able to catch Olajuwon.

That said, I think Josh Smith has an excellent chance of making the top 10 All-Time list. As does Dwight Howard and to a lesser extent Greg Oden (healthy enough for long enough?). For those keeping score at home, Dwight has 948 career blocks in 33 more career games (same age, born three days apart in early December).
