Celtics Waive Hudson

In Free Agency on January 6, 2010 at 7:33 pm

The Boston Globe reports

In a rather shocking move, the Celtics waived guard Lester Hudson just before the deadline that the team had to guarantee his contract for the rest of the season, Hudson participated in the team’s shootaround this morning and I talked to him about his contract and he had no idea whether his deal was guaranteed or whether he would be waived.

“I let my agent handle all of that,” he said this morning.

If Hudson clears waivers, the Celtics could sign him to a 10-day contract. The Celtics brought Hudson to Miami, had him participate in shootaround only to release him in the afternoon. The NBA can be brutal at times.

I wasn’t expecting this one. Strange decision from the Celtics … unless they’re gearing up for a run at Rafer Alston.

Hopefully, Lestor Hudson will hang on in the NBA for at least another year and change. He’s a low level prospect but an interesting one. He looks like a good defender plus has some scoring ability. He needs to work on his composure, confidence, decision making and overall floor leadership. With some development in those areas he could become a useful backup point guard.

If Boston does not re-sign Hudson after he clears waivers … then I think he’s done for the season, NBA wise. He’ll likely head to the D-League in that case. I don’t think he has the reputation necessary to get another job offer mid-season. He’ll have to work his way back into the league through some assortment of lower leagues, summer leagues, and/or training camps.

Update: Hudson Joins Grizzlies

Adrian Wojnarowski reports via twitter (1 + 2 + 3)

Memphis has been awarded Lester Hudson off waivers, a league source tells Y! Sports. The Celtics let the rookie point guard go this week.

Memphis had scouted Hudson a great deal at nearby Tennessee-Martin, before Boston had picked him with the 58th pick of June Draft.

Hudson’s a Memphis native and will sit in stands with GM Chris Wallace tonight. “He’s very happy,” his agent, Lance Young, wrote in email.

Nice signing for the Grizzlies. They needed a third string point guard. There primary backup, Jamaal Tinsley, hasn’t been playing well either so there is a good opportunity there for Hudson.
