RealGM reports

The Atlanta Hawks today requested waivers on forward Othello Hunter, according to Executive Vice President/General Manager Rick Sund.

Hunter appeared in seven games this season, and averaged 1.6 ppg and 1.7 rpg in 4.7 mpg (.333 FG%, .750 FT%). He played in 16 games with Atlanta last season as a rookie, and had four playoff appearances. Overall, in 23 career regular season games with the Hawks, Hunter compiled 1.4 ppg and 1.6 rpg in 5.4 mpg (.469 FG%, .333 FT%).

I know next to nothing about Hunter … other than, by all accounts, he’s a good rebounder.

Anyway, it’s a little surprising to see the Hawks waive Hunter. They were already at the league minimum of 13 bodies on their roster so now they’ll have to sign someone else to replace Hunter. No financial savings.

However, the Hawks roster was top heavy with big men. Seven of their thirteen players were bigs — Josh Smith, Al Horford, Zaza Pachulia, Joe Smith, Jason Collins, Randolph Morris and Othello Hunter — while the other six players took up the three perimeter spots — Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Mike Bibby, Jamal Crawford, Mo Evans, Jeff Teague — so presumably the Hawks will look to add a perimeter player instead of replacing Hunter with another big man.

Atlanta has more than enough coverage with their big men and in the backcourt so they should focus on acquiring a new ring player. Preferably a small forward with some size if possible.
