Bucks Waive Roko Ukic

RealGM has the press release

The Milwaukee Bucks have requested waivers on guard Roko Ukic (6-5, 190), General Manager John Hammond announced today. Ukic requested to have his contract voided by Milwaukee, removing any further obligation by the Bucks for the remainder of his contract.”Roko asked to be released from his contract in order to pursue other playing opportunities,” said Hammond. “We appreciate his hard work and professionalism while with the Bucks and wish him well in his career.”

In 13 games for the Bucks this season, Ukic averaged 3.1 points in 7.5 minutes per game. He was acquired along with Carlos Delfino from Toronto on August 18 for Amir Johnson and Sonny Weems.

The Bucks roster now stands at 14 players.

Thoughts

Good decision by the Bucks. I read that a team in Europe Spain, Real Madrid I think it was, were pursuing Ukic so I presume that’s where he is heading now.

Edit: Ukic is joining Fenerbahce. Not Real Madrid. Hat tip to Onur.

Summary of Strengths

Good defender + very good penetrator (mainly off pick and rolls where he uses his size very well) … poor-to-very poor at everything else.

Weaknesses

Lack of scoring ability — no perimeter shot, no midrange shot, poor finisher in the paint, doesn’t draw fouls — a weak scorer in every sense.

Lack of point guard skills — very poor passer relative to his position, only useful passes are on the drive and kick and even then those passes are weak, so-so handle, poor decision making, can’t run an offense — overall a horribly inefficient offensive player. Only effective when he has the ball in his hands and allowed to dominate the ball and ostracize his teammates. Also, a below par rebounder despite his impressive size/athleticism.

Potential + Development

Roko Ukic is 26 years old at the end of this season and has reportedly shown little improvement over the last few seasons (dating back to the last couple of years he spent in Europe). Considering his age + lack of improvement + clear need for improvement … it doesn’t look like Roko will ever become good enough to be a rotation worthy player in the NBA.

I don’t Ukic is currently good enough to be in the NBA. He’s a very poor third string point guard. Capable of a great game here and there but a dozen bad games usually follow. He does a lot of harm to his own team due to his offensive limitations.

  1. He is heading to a Turkish team Fenerbahce, not to Real Madrid..

  2. Thanks for the info Onur. I’ll change that.

Edit: Oh, that’s funny, Ukic is replacing Will Solomon.

That’s an impressive team — Ukic + Greer + Giricek + Turkcan + Asik + Erden — lot of talent on that roster. I don’t recognize any of the other names on the roster.

  3. After watching Roko in SL, it didn’t look like his was going to stick beyond this season anyway.
