Open Roster Spots

(1) How many teams are carrying full rosters?

(2) How many teams have open roster spots? One open spot or two open spots? And who are those teams?

Full Rosters

The following teams are carrying 15 players on their roster

  • Boston Celtics
  • Cleveland Cavaliers
  • Dallas Mavericks
  • Golden State Warriors
  • Indiana Pacers
  • Los Angeles Clippers
  • Miami Heat
  • Milwaukee Bucks
  • Minnesota Timberwolves
  • New Jersey Nets
  • New Orleans Hornets
  • Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Portland Trailblazers
  • San Antonio Spurs
  • Toronto Raptors
  • Washington Wizards

Open Roster Spots

These teams have one open roster spot (14 man rosters)

  • Charlotte Bobcats
  • Detroit Pistons
  • Houston Rockets
  • Memphis Grizzlies
  • New York Knicks
  • Phoenix Suns
  • Sacramento Kings
  • Utah Jazz

These teams have two open roster spots (league minimum 13 bodies)

  • Atlanta Hawks
  • Chicago Bulls
  • Denver Nuggets
  • Los Angeles Lakers
  • Orlando Magic
  • Philadelphia 76ers

Summary

Only six teams (20%) are carrying the league minimum of 13 players on their roster. Five of those six teams are heavy favourites to make the playoffs, and the sixth (Phily) has a shot at making the playoffs. Two of those teams (Lakers/Magic) are title contenders and arguably the frontrunners in either conference.

Another eight teams (26.7%) currently have one open roster spot.

That leaves 16 teams (53.3%) of the league who are carrying full rosters.

Notes

  • The Chicago Bulls are carrying only 13 players to avoid hitting the luxury tax threshold. So they’re unlikely to add more player(s) as the season progresses without finding a way to cut costs first.
  • The Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Lakers and the Orlando Magic are also carrying the league minimum 13 players to avoid increasing their luxury tax bill even further. They, too, are unlikely to carry additional players this season.
  • The Atlanta Hawks have their deepest team in years and I didn’t think they could sign anyone who could crack their rotation. I believe that’s the reason they only have 13 bodies on their roster. No idea why the Sixers are carrying so few because their bench needs all the help it can get.
