ESPN reports

The Denver Nuggets have signed backup Renaldo Balkman to a contract extension and also exercised the fourth-year option on guard Arron Afflalo, who was acquired from Detroit last summer.Known for his hustle and ability to slip through defenses for easy baskets, Balkman averaged a career-best five points and 3.8 rebounds while shooting a career-high 55.8 percent in 53 games with Denver last season.

Terms of Balkman’s deal were not disclosed.

Huh, I didn’t see that one coming.

Balkman is set to earn $2 million this season, I wonder if he was offered the same or more in this extension. If so, that looks a risky play. We’ll have to wait for the contract details to come to light before deciding whether this was a good deal for the Nuggets are not.

Renaldo Balkman hasn’t played in either of the Nuggets first two games and only featured in 53 games for Denver last season.

It’ll be interesting to hear what they’re expecting from Balkman over the next few years. Rotation player? Or not? Small forward? Power forward? Questions abound.
