Who’s Losing or Gaining Weight?

I’ll be using this post here to keep track of players who have lost or gained a substantial amount of weight this offseason. It’ll be interesting to see how many players, and specifically which players, benefit from drastically changing their physique over the summer.

This is only an early draft, and I’ll be adding more names as I come across them over the next few days. If there’s anybody I should be aware, please point them out in the comments!


Which players are losing or gaining a lot of weight this offseason?

Losing Weight

Big Names

  • Al Jefferson lost 31 pounds and is now down to 262 pounds. I like that playing weight for Big Al.
    • Good article with some good quotes from Jefferson in Sporting News.
  • Eddy Curry lost 40 pounds and is now down to 317 pounds. And, I think he’s still at least forty or so pounds overweight.
    • Since Curry uses a power based post game being a heavy weight helps him, so he needs to retain a lot of his muscle/weight … but I think increased mobility makes a more well rounded offensive threat + adds some helpful explosiveness out of the low post.
    • I think the 275-285 range seems like an ideal playing weight. He regains a lot of the explosiveness + mobility that he’s lost over the last few years while he’s been carrying 300+lbs.
    • The increased mobility helps Curry the most in three situations — individual player movement (too stagnant currently, stays in one spot and asks for the ball, easy to defend) + he’s a dynamite pick and roll player because of his hands, athleticism, and screens + screens in general, largely due to increased activity.
  • Kendrick Perkins has lost 15 pounds and is now down to 270lbs, which is lightest weight in three years. Doc Rivers credits the weight loss for Perk’s improved mobility + improved screen and roll defense so far in training camp.
  • The Great Tim Duncan has lost 15 pounds in an effort to improve his quickness + agility as he ages. Nice story on ESPN on the big fella.
  • Kevin Love has dropped a much needed 20 pounds.
  • I hear that Zach Randolph has lost a fair bit of weight this summer  … more on this later.
  • Amare Stoudemire lost 13lbs in 9 days right before training camp started. Don’t know what to make of that.
  • Greg Oden has slimmed down 14 pounds. I like that decision. He needs to try and regain the mobility he showed from when he first arrived in the NBA.
  • The Wizards — Gilbert Arenas dropped 22 pounds. Mike James dropped 25 pounds. Caron Butler dropped 11 pounds. DeShawn Stevenson dropped 10 pounds, and Andray Blatche dropped five pounds.
  • Dirk Nowitzki dropped 12 pounds.
  • Andrew Bynum has dropped 13 pounds and is now down to 272lbs.
  • Carmelo Anthony has dropped down from 240lbs to 228lbs. His college playing days weight.

Less Acclaimed Players

  • Roy Hibbert looks in fantastic shape. I’ve seen no numbers, but he’s lean. Lean and Mean. Big Roy looks like a totally different player.
  • Glen Davis has lost 20-25 pounds of excess weight but replaced most of it with added muscle. So he hasn’t slimmed down as much as he’s improved his conditioning.
  • Randolph Morris — lost 60 pounds this summer — I think Morris will be this year’s winner for the most weight lost.
  • A number of reports saying that Rasho Nesterovic has dropped a few pounds. He does look lighter than he has been for quite some time.
  • Marc Gasol has dropped 15-20 pounds. Good move from Gasol.
  • Jose Calderon has also dropped 15lbs. I’m not sure that was a good decision. I never thought he was overweight. It’ll be interesting to see how, or if, this effects him.
  • Quentin Richardson dropped some weight (10lbs or more, I can’t find out his previous weight). He is now down to 228lbs which is around the weight he played at in college.

Gaining Weight

The Big Names

  • Chris Bosh has gained 15-20 pounds of muscle and is now packing almost 250 pounds. As long as Chris doesn’t lose any of his quickness, the extra weight should do him some good … more defensively than offensively.
  • Rudy Gay gained 20lbs of muscle.
  • Yi gained 20 pounds of muscle.
  • Rajon Rondo gained 11 pounds and is now 186 pounds after entering the NBA at 160lbs three years ago.
  • Dwight Howard added another 10 pounds of muscle onto his frame.
  • Joakim Noah also added 10 pounds of muscle — first time in his career where he’s bulked up. Hopefully, the extra strength will help improve his one-on-one defense.
  • Chris Paul added 11 pounds to his frame to help himself handle the physical beating he’s been taking over the past few years, and to better defender taller stronger players in the post (mostly switches).

Lesser Names

  • Nobody so far.
