Celtics Near Contract With Davis

Yahoo Sports reports

Glen “Big Baby” Davis is close to signing a two-year contract to stay with the Boston Celtics, a league source told Yahoo! Sports on Friday night.

The deal is expected to be signed early next week.

Davis tried to get several teams to offer him the mid-level exception, but a depressed financial market made it hard for that to happen. A handful of teams – including Detroit, New Orleans and New Jersey – discussed sign-and-trade scenarios with the Celtics, but Boston general manager Danny Ainge never wanted to lose him.

It’s looked very likely for some time now that Glen Davis would return to the Celtics. The market place simply dried up.

No word on the financials yet … I’d guess $5-6 million over two years … which would be a good deal for Davis and a solid deal for Boston.

Update: BBD signed for $6.3 million over two years.

Update: Both ESPN and Yahoo Sports are reporting that Davis has a guarnateed $5 million for the two years, and a further conditional $500k per year depending on Davis meeting his weight requirements.

Some good quotes from that ESPN news report

“We have some guys who are getting up there in age. I think it’s important to surround our Big Three and Rasheed with young guys,” Ainge said. “We feel like we’ve got one of the best front lines in all of basketball. We have six really good basketball players on our front line right now. It’s a long season; we’re going to need all the bodies we can get.”

“Glen really came into his own last season in the second half when he got a chance to play,” Ainge said. “He wants to play. Just like all young players, he wants a more significant role.”
