Kobe & Ariza High Five

Game One

I’m giddy about these NBA Finals.  This should be a terrific matchup and a very exciting series.

First Quarter

Orlando lead 7-6 after the first two plus minutes.

  • Gasol pulls down the defensive rebound after Rafer’s missed floater. Lakers come up court, quick post up for Kobe, he pressures Lee, turns middle, kickout, runs out the right wing, gets the ball back, drives hard down the baseline, draws a foul. Sideline inbounds, back to Bryant on the left wing against Lee, he forces the contested fallaway jumper, miss.
  • Baseline inbounds for the Lakers, Fisher backdoor cut, layup, missed, putback, good! That’s the fourth lead change already
  • Hedo Turkoglu with a nice dribble drive into the paint and the finish
  • Andrew Bynum dunks the ball home inside, off the offensive rebound. He has 6 points on 3-3 shooting.
  • Orlando post up Howard on the right block, he faces up Bynum, drives right into him, goes up strong, picks up a sloppy foul from Bynum, and splits a pair at the line.

10-10 tie game — 8 minutes to play in the first quarter

  • Kobe Bryant catch and shoot from the left elbow, knocks it down over Lee. Lakers lead.
  • Hedo Turkoglu on the left wing, high pick and roll with Howard, drives left, stops and pops from 15 feet, hits it. Weak contest from Ariza.
  • Howard goaltends Kobe’s driving layup, Kobe got it up off the glass before Howard could get there.
  • Oh nice move from Howard, left block, goes left, crossover right, beats Bynum easily, into the paint, running hook as other Lakers come over to help, miss. Good look at the rim and a nice move. A little out of control on the release, but a good initial move.
  • Lakers defensive rebound, run upcourt, early post up for Bryant again, backs down Lee, into the paint, miss … fastbreak Orlando, Courtney Lee goes hard at Bryant, to the rim, misses the layup, offensive rebound, putback.
  • Andrew Bynum posts up on the left post, backs Howard down, turns middle, jump hook, fouled by Howard.

Timeout — 6 lead changes and 3 ties — this should be a terrific series!

14-14 tie game — 5:30 to play in the first quarter

  • Nice pass from Hedo Turkoglu to find Tony Battie open 17 feet from the rim, right elbow extended, miss. Loose ball foul on Gasol on the rebound, Orlando hold onto the ball.
  • Hedo Turkoglu beats Bryant off the dribble, too easy, down from the right corner, into the paint, dumps it low to Howard, slam dunk.
  • Gasol in the post, turns middle, misses the short flip shot. Mike Breen feels like he rushed it. Howard pulls down the rebound.
  • Gasol rips down a defensive rebound off the Pietrus miss. I like it when Gasol rebounds the ball, makes him a monster.
  • Fisher hits a long jumper, shot fake on the three, one dribble pull up
  • Lakers are doubling off of Tony Battie, Hedo gives it back to him, 19 footer at the top of the key, miss.
  • Reach in foul on Bynum — dumb foul — as he tried to strip Howard in the lane from behind, he was never getting that ball. Odom enters the game.

Three minutes to play — Lakers lead 20-18 as Dwight hits two FTs

  • Battie does a brilliant job making himself tall, arms up straight, blocks Gasol’s weak short lay in.
  • Interesting matchups there — Howard is on Lamar Odom and Battie is on Gasol. Odom should try to drive on Howard, see if he can draw a foul.
  • Timeout
  • Turkoglu drops a pair of free throws to tie up the game
  • walton is in the game and immediately makes a nice pass inside to Pau Gasol for the dunk
  • Pau Gasol draws the charge on Howard, good call, Gortat checks in.
  • Pietrus does a good job deflecting the post entry pass inside to Kobe Bryant
  • Pau Gasol cuts across the paint, Odom passes it inside, great contest from Gortat, miss.
  • Rashard Lewis with a nice offensive rebound, then draws a push foul from Odom in the post. Lakers are in the penalty, Lewis makes two.

Final minute and a half — the game is tied up at 22-22.

  • Alston does a superb job pushing the ball on the break, into the paint, leaves it for Gortat, fumble. Lovely set up for the easy dunk. Refs say it went out of LA, Orlando ball.
  • Hedo Turkoglu misses a line drive pull up J off the bounce from the top of the key after whirling around a Gortat pick.
  • Rafer Alston into the paint, teardrop, hits it!
  • Kobe quick move off the catch from the top of the key, drives right, help comes, kickout, Farmar three, misses.
  • Pietrus slices his way into the paint, flips up a runner, misses
  • Kobe dribbles the ball down, trying to get the final shot, drives left, stops, pump fakes, loses Pietrus, up and under, hangs on the rim, and rolls out. Unlucky. Nice move.

Second Quarter

Orlando lead 24-22

Jameer Nelson enters the game. This will be very interesting to watch.

  • Lamar Odom knocks down a left wing jumper.
  • Jameer comes around a high pick and roll, doesn’t look to attack, swings the ball. Lee starts dribbling, too much dribbling, starting to look worrisome, Vujacic bails out the Magic with a stupid foul.
  • High pick and roll between Nelson and Gortat, lovely bounce pass by Nelson to Gortat for an easy dunk. Great pass.
  • Gortat blocks/strips Vujacic on his dribble drive, running layup.
  • Gortat offensive rebound, kicks it out, Nelson swings the ball, Lewis knocks down the three pointer.
  • Beautiful put back slam by Lamar Odom.
  • Jameer Nelson runs down the right hand side of the lane, under the rim, out the other side, baseline 14 footer, hits it
  • Luke Walton faces up Pietrus on the right wing, goes right, into the paint, layup, uses the rim well to protect the shot, hits it. Nice move.
  • Great collapsing defense from Orlando, force a turnover on Odom.

9:30 to play — Orlando lead 31-28

  • Orlando looking a little nervous right now — Lewis and Pietrus in particular, and Lee looks a tad hesitant. Nelson and Gortat look relaxed.
  • Lovely pass inside to Gasol for the open dunk, oh wow, great rotation and strip by Lee to deny the layup … steal. That’ll get his confidence pumped up.
  • Jameer Nelson just created another bucket

Timeout Lakers. They must be a tad upset at how Nelson as opened them up here on the first few possessions here in the second quarter

  • Luke Walton gets inside and hits an easy one. He shoots easily over the smaller Lee.
  • Great job by Odom, he jumped up, made himself big and deflected Lee’s drive and kick at the rim, turnover.
  • Gorat with a quick second jump to block Bynum’s 2 foot shot
  • Bynum posts up left block, turns baseline, lefty hook, misses, rebound Bynum
  • Nice pass by Nelson to Gorat, he gets fouled on the finish but no call, misses the layup.
  • Excellent pass inside to Walton in deep position down in the post, hits it!
  • Pietrus misses another shot — that’s 0-5 from the field from Pietrus
  • Kobe Bryant posts up Courtney Lee, backs him down, spins middle, short shot in the crowd, hits it! 6-0 Lakers run.

LA has taken the lead back 34-33 — Timeout Orlando — 7 minutes to play

  • Lewis misses a running jump shot from 15 feet, misses, Howard keeps it alive, but the Lakers come away with it.
  • Bryant draws a foul inside on Pietrus’ post up.
  • Lakers score again — 8-0 run — Kobe Bryant hitting the pull up jump shot off of the pick and roll
  • Jameer Nelson left wide open at the top of the key and he misses a three pointer. Lakers pull down another rebound — they’re plus five on the backboards
  • Bryant scores again, rising over Pietrus and hitting the 17 footer, from an almost identical spot as the possession before. Solid contest from Pietrus, but Kobe is way too comfortable in the knowledge of what shots he can get against Pietrus.

Lakers lead 38-33 with five plus minutes to play

  • Howard goes right at Andrew Bynum, short shot in a crowd, great help D from LA, misses, Pietrus keeps it alive … LA come away with the rebound, fastbreak, layup, miss, LA get it back.
  • Kobe Bryant top of the key, drives down the right hand side of the lane, misses the layup, Bynum rebounds, misses the putback.
  • Orlando post up Howard down on the left post, Howard spinning, fouled by Bynum as he slaps at the ball instead of playing defense. Stupid foul. That’s number three from Bynum. Pau Gasol checks back in. Howard splits a pair at the stripe.
  • Nelson is still in the game — eight straight minutes now
  • Kobe Bryant finds Fisher open in the left corner, he nails a corner jumper. Fish is 3-4 from the field.
  • Howard trapped hard in the post, Howard spins baseline, tries to dunk, Gasol fouls. Gasol gave up the baseline there, bad post defense. Howard makes two. He has taken 8 FTs aleady, making 6.
  • Kobe Bryant has his pass broken up by Nelson, but Kobe gets it back, Kobe dribbles the ball twice, fadeaway shot from 17 feet over Pietrus, hits it
  • Drive and kick from Nelson to Pietrus, wide open three pointer, he hits it! Thank goodness!
  • Kobe Bryant pull up jumper off the dribble out of the pick and roll, hits it!
  • Hedo Turkoglu was fouled, then forced the jumper hoping for FTs, refs didn’t give it to him.

Timeout — Lakers leading 45-39 with 2:40 left to play in the first half

  • Lamar Odom scores on a layup down in the paint

Lakers lead 32-16 for in the paint scoring

  • Lot of contact down in the paint, Howard wants the foul, doesn’t get it.
  • Bryant misses a face up jumper from 17 feet along the baseline, rebound Orlando.
  • Jameer Nelson comes off the high pick and roll, drives left, stops, pump fakes, Fisher bodies him, Nelson goes up through him and hits a 7 foot bank shot.
  • Bryant toying with Pietrus, drive and kick to Gasol, 18 foot baseline J, hits it
  • Rashard Lewis takes a quick three pointer from the top of the key, misses.

Final minute — Lakers lead 49-41

  • Fisher drives around the baseline, dumps it off to Powell, blocked by Gortat … but LA hangs onto it again.
  • Baseline inbounds, Fisher backdoor cut again, burns Orlando for the second time tonight, two layups for Fisher on a baseline inbounds.
  • Turkoglu draws the foul on a nice pump fake off the dribble. He makes two at the line, first points of the second quarter.
  • 13.7 seconds to play — LA will hold the ball for the final shot — Bryant dribbles upcourt, high pick and roll, Bryant drives on Gortat, great contest, Bryant gets the runner to go anyway! Wow!

Lakers leading 53-43

  • Los Angeles leads 24-17 on the backboards. Huge advantage.
  • The Orlando Magic have hit 14-39 shot attempts from the field for 35.9% shooting, and only 3-11 from downtown for 27% three point shooting. That’s an eFG% of 39.7%. They are 12-14 from the FT line, and that’s why they’re still in this game.
  • Los Angeles have hit 25-48 shot attempts (52%), 1-4 from downtown, and 2-2 from the line. They have an eFG% of 53%
  • The Lakers have 12 assists on 25 baskets
  • The Magic have 6 assists on 14 baskets
  • The Lakers 2 steals and 1 block, whilst Orlando has 5 steals and 5 blocks.
  • Orlando has only three turnovers, with LA not scoring off of the turnovers. The Lakers, meanwhile, have five turnovers costing them 7 points.

Some individual stat lines

  • Kobe Bryant leads the way with 18 points on 9-18 shooting and added 6 dimes and 4 rebounds
  • Fisher was the second leading scorer with 9 points. Bynum third with 8 points. Three Lakers were tied with six points, Gasol, Walton, and Odom.
  • Bynum had 6 rebounds in 13 minutes. Odom had another 6 in 15 minutes. Great rebounding from those two.
  • Hedo Turkoglu led the way for Orlando in the first quarter, scoring 9 of his 11 points. The problem is his playmaking, only one assist. Orlando need more creativity and passing from Hedo.
  • Dwight Howard had 8 points on 1-4 shooting, 6-8 FTs, and 1 turnover. He also had 4 boards in 14 minutes.
  • Gortat added 4 boards, 2 steals, 2 blocks, in 8 minutes. 2 points too! Great job by Gortat!
  • Lewis has only 5 points on 5 shot attempts. Pietrus has only 3 points on 6 shots.
  • Rafer Alston has only 4 points and 1 assist in 11 minutes. I don’t think he played in the second quarter.
  • Nelson had four points on 2-4 shooting and 4 dimes in 10 minutes.
  • Courtney Lee has four points on five shots.

Orlando need to get their offense going in the second half to have any chance of winning this game.

Third Quarter

Lakers lead 53-43

  • Kobe Bryant scores a bucket off the up an under.
  • Nice basket in transition for Orlando — they haven’t gotten out into the open floor often enough tonight, Lakers have done a very good job with their transition defense.
  • Rashard Lewis drives hard to the rim, but misses the layup. He wanted the foul.
  • Fisher catch and shoot from 22 feet, right elbow extended, miss.
  • Bynum picks up a touch foul down in the paint — that’s number four — Odom checks in

A little under 10 minutes to play — Lakers lead 57-46

  • Excellent pass inside to Dwight Howard, lay in, misses it, great seal on Pau Gasol to offer a passing angle in the middle of the lane, goes up, Odom-Gasol-Bryant all go up and hack Howard on his putback attempt, foul. That’s number three on Odom. Howard misses the first FT, misses the second one.
  • Hedo Turkoglu fumbles the ball on his dribble drive, turnover, out of bounds. Good defense.
  • Bryant isolation in the right corner, blows by Lee going left, tripped up in the act of shooting. Lee’s second.
  • Howard posts up inside, great job by Bryant doubling down, kickout, Lee knocks down a triple! Love it!

59-50 Lakers lead with 8 minutes to play

  • Pietrus checks in for Lee — I think Lee was called for that foul, missed it.
  • Gasol backs down Lewis, turns middle, 11 foot turnaround, Lewis contests it, blocks it. Called for a foul. Somewhat harsh unless it was for the contact prior to Gasol going up with the shot. Gasol makes two.
  • Nice pass again from Howard out of the post, but Orlando misses from the perimeter.
  • Excellent pick from Gasol, Kobe dribbles around the screen, knocks down the 17 foot pull up jumper, and gets fouled, hits the FT. He has 27 points.
  • Dwight Howard gets the ball deep in the paint, turns to shoots but hits Gasol with the elbow to the body. Third foul.
  • Terrible touch foul from Hedo Turkoglu — three point play for Odom as he hits the lay in and, nope, misses the FT

Lakers lead 66-50 with 6 minutes to play

  • Alston misses another jump shot
  • Pick and roll between Kobe and Gasol, lovely threaded bounce pass, Gasol with the up and under in mid air, hits the layup.
  • Timeout Orlando — they’re done.

This game is effectively over. Orlando’s offense hasn’t been good enough to make up this lead, and their defense hasn’t been able to stop Orlando. I can’t see them managing a comeback.

  • Lewis pump fakes on the three pointer, Odom flies by, Lewis takes a dribble inside, 16 footer, misses.
  • Gasol can’t handle the lob pass over the top, he was being fronted in the post, loses control of it … loose ball, out of bounds off of Orlando.
  • Bryant misses a pull up jumper over Pietrus
  • Good job by Howard to deflect Odom’s high post pass, that would have given Gasol an easy layup … Kobe gets the loose ball, shot clock ticking down, hard drive to the rim, scores the layup
  • Ariza blocks Lewis inside in the paint. Nice play.
  • Kobe Bryant pulls down another rebound as Turkoglu misses a shot from the corner
  • Poor lob pass inside to Howard as he was being fronted in the post, turnover.

Lakers lead 72-52 with 3:30 to play

  • Kobe Bryant dancing on Pietrus out of the midpost, pump fakes in mid air, fouled, off glass from 10 feet in the middle of the paint, hits it! Three point play!
  • Pietrus hits a dribble in three pointer from the top of the key
  • Bryant pulls down his 7th rebound, to go with 7 assists, and 30 points.
  • Bryant throws it cross court to Ariza, wide open three pointer, Ariza knocks it down.
  • No turnovers for Kobe.

The Lakers finish the fourth quarter with the lead, 82-58

Fourth Quarter

Final Thoughts

This one was a massacre. I’m going to have a quick look at some of the box score stats through three quarters (fourth was garbage time, I don’t care about that one)

  • Offensive efficiency
    • Los Angeles — 124.2
    • Orlando — 87.9
  • eFG%
    • Los Angeles — 52.9%
    • Orlando — 36.2%
  • Rebounding battle — Lakers won 37-28
  • Lakers almost doubling up on the Magic in both assists (15 to 8) and made baskets (35 to 18)
  • Magic leading 12-7 in combined steals+blocks
  • Turnovers equal
  • Orlando were 16-20 from the line. LA were 10-11

Some individual lines

  • Kobe Bryant — 36 points, 8 dimes, 6 rebounds and 0 turnovers — incredible performance
  • Lamar Odom had 8 points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes
  • The rest of the Lakers stat lines are similar to the halftime report
  • Dwight has a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds on 1-6 shooting from the field, 8-12 shooting from the line, and 2 turnovers. Also had 2 blocks, 1 assist, and 1 steal.
  • Lewis had only 8 points. Hedo still stuck on 11 points. Nelson didn’t play until the end of the quarter. Rafer still on 6 points, Pietrus has 8 points. No good scoring efforts from any of Orlando’s players.

Last Thought

Kobe Bryant is about to paint his masterpiece.

I expect this is only the first of several spectacular performances from Kobe Bryant. A defining moment, a defining series, in his career.

  1. Dave,

    I agree.

Picasso took his first brushstroke this evening. 🙂

  2. Dave,

Did you hear JVG great quotation from Yogi Berra during the early stages of last night’s blowout?

JVG: Sometimes it gets late pretty early. [in a series like this one]

Classic stuff … from both ‘The Undertaker’ and ‘The Yogster’. 🙂

  3. Give me a break he’s playing against the Orlando Magic, he better be putting up numbers like that. But in the end, he’ll choke, cuz he’s Kobe Bryant and he can’t win without Shaq.

  4. Mag,

Would you care to place a small wager on that perception you happen to hold re: Kobe Bryant?

If you have a PayPal account …

I will wager $100 that the LA Lakers [with Kobe and without Shaq] win this series vs the Orlando Magic.

I will wager $100 that the Orlando Magic will win this series vs the LA Lakers [with Kobe and without Shaq].

Loser pays the Winner via PayPal within the first week after the final game is completed.

    Deal, or No Deal?

[if you’re so inclined, you have until tip-off of Game Two to accept this offer]

PS. There’s no need to give you any “preferential” odds, since you are calling out all those who do not believe what you believe about Kobe Bryant, and you think that the Magic are, in fact, going to win the series out-right because Kobe is a choke-artist.

  5. Please excuse the typo in the prior comment … which should actually read as:
