Game Time: New Orleans vs Los Angeles

In Game Log / Recap on November 13, 2008 at 2:25 am

Peja Stojakovic – 21ppg in 36 minutes a night shooting 47% from the field and 60% from three on almost 10 attempts per game from downtown. The Lakers defense was disgracefully bad on him more often than not (especially Radmanovic). Good test for this team’s D.

First Quarter

  • Hornets can’t get the lights to come back on after turning them off for the pregame introductions. There’s enough light on the court but not around the rest of the stadium. They’re holding up the start of th contest to see if they can quickly fix the problem.
  • The court is looking brighter now. They must have some if not all of the lights on.
  • Haywoode Workman is a ref tonight.
  • Jump ball to start the game, problem on the jump ball, problem on the jump, is the third or fourth jump ball? Chandler wins the tip
  • Chandler low post, drives hard to the middle, takes a poor jump hook, Bynum blocks it easily. Chandler didn’t use his body well enough to protect the ball.
  • Peja drives on Radmanovic, gets into the lane, floater, misses
  • Lakers run the other way, Radmanovic has it, finds Pau Gasol, slam dunk. Nice pass by Radmanovic, good timing on the pass.
  • Chris Paul penetrates into the lane, draws Bynum out, hooks the pass around Bynum, Chandler slam dunk, hacked from behind by Radmanovic.
  • Chandler misses the first FT, makes the second. What did he shoot from the FT line year? 61% was it? It’d be great if he could improve that.
  • Radmanovic runs off a screen, gets open top of the screen, catch and shoot, nails the three
  • Pau Gasol hangs back off West, West takes a bounce, poor choice, now takes the jumper, Gasol gets a hand in his face and makes that shot tough, miss
  • Gasol bags a jumper on the other end
  • Mo Peterson drives on Radmanovic, takes the floater, misses, offensive rebound Chandler tapped out of bounds by Bynum. Good battle between those two on that rebound.
  • Paul drives into the lane, finds Mo Pete in the corner, pump fake, one dribble left, wide open, takes it, misses it
  • Peja helping off Radmanovic on Kobe, Kobe passes it out, Peja recovers to contest the shot but it’s a good look, miss
  • David West with the slam dunk in the halfcourt, he pump faked the 20 footer right elbow extended, drove right and stuffed it home before anyone reacted
  • Lakers ahead 7-3
  • Fisher nails a three pointer
  • Chris Paul runs off a high screen and roll, stops and pops from 18 feet left wing, nails the jumper
  • Gasol faces up Gasol a little off the left elbow, beats him left, turns back, shoots over West, misses …. Paul pushes it the other way and hits the midrange J

  • Paul slices into the paint and hits an off balance fallaway J
  • Fisher nails another three pointer
  • Lakers 3-5 from three pointers in the first five minutes of the game

  • Quick pass high low from Gasol off the elbow to Bynum, fouled inside, Bynum makes two
  • Bynum hacks Chandler inside trying to deny Chandler’s easy dunk.
  • Chandler averaging 9.3ppg, 10rpg, 2.5bpg in the early goings this season. Chandler splits the FTs again.

  • Ariza fouled, makes two at the line. He had 13 and 6 last night, plus three steals.
  • Lakers ahead 24-15
  • Mike James dribbles for 12 seconds, doesn’t pass, dribbles out 17 seconds, doesn’t involve any of his teammates, turnover as he eventually forces a pass, turnover, breakaway dunk Ariza

  • Bynum has 6 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks and numerous other contested shots at the rim.
  • Five Lakers have between 6-9 points in the first half

Alright, I’m calling this game, it’s over, Lakers win.

The Hornets will make a run in the second half, their shooters are far too good to continue this poorly the rest of the way, and their squad has far too much character to give up on the game. They’ll make a run. The Lakers have more than enough quality, and a large enough lead, to outlast any stand the Hornets make.

I do not think this Hornets team can beat LA in a 7 game series. This was a fairly even contest between the two sides late last season, Bynum tips the balance clearly in LA’s favour. Bynum is no small addition, he causes a huge amount of problems for the Hornets; He limits Chandler effectively, he causes Paul problems on his penetration and provides great help D elsewhere because he can help of Chandler, he also gives them a major rebounding presence to give LA extra possessions. This Hornets team cannot beat a full strength Lakers team in the playoffs.
