Game Four: Denver vs Los Angeles

In 2008 NBA Playoffs, Game Log / Recap on April 29, 2008 at 5:19 am

The close out game. Can Denver bring it tonight? I don’t fancy them

I’m tuning in midway through the first once again

  • Bryant nails a three to put LA up 18-8. He’s being cheered by the crowd. Guess those rapist chants went away. He had MVP fans last night to. Reggie Miller thinks it’s the Lakers supporters being noisy and the Nuggets quiet rather than the Nuggets crowd. Bit of both I think.
  • Iverson hits a runner over Fish to cut the lead to 7. Timeout Phil.
  • Kobe to Fisher for three
  • Iverson with a tough tough long jump shot
  • Gasol at the line for two, he has 10 points here in the first
  • Nice bounce pass from Odom to Gasol for the wide open dunk. Great ball and player movement from the Lakers
  • Nene beats two Lakers in the paint to the offensive rebound, muscles it back up and finishes. Draws the foul and hits the FT. Love seeing Nene back in action. Great work.
  • Silly foul by JR Smith on Farmar’s contested jump shot against the end of quarter buzzer. He hits both
  • End of One
  • Lakers lead 31-23
  • Anthony Carter with a nice dodge in mid air to avoid Kobe’s attempted block
  • Turnover, fastbreak, Dunk by Najera. The lead is down to 9. Jordan Farmar with a poor pass.
  • Mbenga is a horrid player, lovely guy, horrid play. He makes me nervous whenever he comes on for LA.
  • Farmar nails a long shot as the clock clicks down
  • JR Smith with an anger filled dunk. He just sprinted through the middle of the defense and jumped over everyone.
  • Kobe misses the second free throw, Marcus Camby lazy on the rebound, DJ Mbenga goes right by him jumps up and slams it home. That’s their season in a nutshell right there.
  • Vujacic nails a long J
  • Kobe slicing and dicing through the lane, making a fool out of Najera, gets by Najera, Camby comes over to help, no look pass to Mbenga for the big dunk
  • Reggie with a nice start. Good work Reg, you’re not bugging me tonight. Eleven of the Lakers twenty baskets have been layups or dunks. Terrible defense.
  • Lakers up 52-40
  • Carter rims out a three, Camby with back to back offensive rebounds, Kenyon with the teardrop. Nice.
  • Radmanovic with a quick three. Too quick.
  • Defensive rebound, outlet pass, Melo has leaked out, layup
  • Gasol to Fisher for three, miss. Camby snatches his 9th rebound despite missing part of the first after his second foul early.
  • Carmelo drives baseline and hits the reverse layup
  • There’s four minutes remianing.
  • Fisher goes off the dribble and hits from the elbow
  • Denver race right back down with JR Smith cutting into the paint and hitting a nice layup. He has 11.
  • Radmanovic answers right back with a driving layup from the left wing finishing on the right hand side of the lane.
  • Kenyon with a big dunk. Nuggets shooting 55%, Lakers 53%. No defense. Quick offense.
  • Gasol with the dunk
  • Melo misses the layup, misses the tap, Camby misses the tap, Lakers bring it down. Lakers take quick jumpers, miss quick jumpers. This game is starting to get away from LA
  • Iverson drives inside and hits the layup, 6 point game.
  • Iverson tries to pull an MJ-on-Malone moment but Gasol was wise to his tricks
  • Gasol with the defensive board off Iverson’s missed layup
  • Kobe to Gasol, Gasol just four feet from the rim, he’s so tall and long. The Nuggets can’t stop the pass. Foul. He hits both.
  • 30 seconds remaining in the half
  • “Best half of the series” for the Nuggets Reggie says. He’s right, and they’ve been atrocious defensively.
  • Gasol at the buzzer. He catches the ball 4 feet from the rim, pivots around, hits the reverse layup at the buzzer. Come on Najera doesn’t have a prayer of containing a guy that big.

Halftime. I haven’t been paying enough attention to this one. Figured I’d admit it. It’s been pretty poor. No defense from either side. LA are in control. Once again their superior ball and player movement is ringing true. The Nuggets are forcing tough one-on-one plays while the Lakers just pass it around and get an easy layup.

  • Iverson drive and dish to Camby at the elbow, he steps to hoop dishes it to his right to Melo for the open dunk. Foul.
  • Offensive foul on Kobe. Carmelo is on Bryant.
  • Lakers lead 64-57
  • Carter misses the three
  • Kobe in the post over Anthony Carter, spin move baseline, layup. They’re switching the defensive coverage on him. Actually no Carmelo is back on him, just a switch on transition defense.
  • Camby from behind with the block on Radmanovic’s layup
  • Carter passes up the three, drives, dishes to Iverson, Iverson drives, dishes to Carter, Carter with a nice drive and floater, swatted out of there by Odom.
  • Iverson to the hoop on the break against Gasol, Pau smacks it out of play. Can’t bring that weak stuff inside. Technical on Iverson. Fisher hits the FT. Iverson leading the league in playoff technicals.
  • Carter with the save, Kenyon wants it more than anyone else, rips it from Kobe. Alley oop to Melo, hard dunk, missed, bounces into the crowd.
  • Carmelo picks up his fourth. Switches off Bryant to Odom. George is going to leave him in, he has no choice. They need Carmelo to win.
  • Odom picks up his fourth going over the back on Melo. Dumb foul. Sub, Walton in for Odom.
  • Iverson takes the 20 footer off the dribble, good.
  • Lakers do seem like they’re going through the motions, right again Reggie. I’m enjoying listening to you tonight
  • Carmelo misses his 18 footer, Kenyon gets to the glass, Iverson drives and takes that fallaway in the middle of the lane off the drive and hits the shot
  • Nuggets down 5 now
  • Kobe to the rim, misses, he wanted the foul. He complains. Carmelo runs the other way and makes the layup
  • 6 minutes to go
  • Gasol in the post against Camby, Camby swipes at the ball, foul. Good move to get Gasol the ball. Their offense has been too perimeter orientated and too Kobe heavy the last few minutes
  • Radmanovic from three. Appearantly he was 1-9 previously.
  • Walton takes the defensive rebound off of Carter’s three. He’s 1-7. Reggie thinks he should stop shooting, damn right, he’s way active trying to get his shot for my taste. Simply not a good enough scorer to do that.
  • Walton gets the step on Melo, goes baseline, takes it hard, blows the layup
  • Fastbreak the other way, Iverson on the drive, over Rad, yes.
  • Gasol with the lovely pass to the cutting Fish, he loses control of the ball, gets it back, layup, no, Camby from behind with the rejection. Oh no, that got loud Reggie going, stop Reg, we were getting on so well. Calm down. Bring it back. Please?
  • Kobe from 37 feet to beat the buzzer, no
  • Iverson to Smith, from three? Yes
  • Lakers up three with three to play in the third. Fish drives, passes baseline to Walton, he passes up the shot, passes it to the top to Kobe, Kobe drives, loses it. Fastbreak the other way, Iverson driving into the paint, Fisher for the charge, blocking foul.
  • Kleiza faces up and takes the 16 footer. Denver lead, 73-71, crowd giving some defense chants
  • Bryant for three, no. Radmanovic on the offensive rebound, puts it home, stops the 10-0 run.
  • Kenyon Martin is back on Kobe and he’s playing brilliant defense
  • Radmanovic from three, Lakers back in the lead
  • The Lakers need to go back to Gasol. The man is a 20ppg 50+% shooter who passes like a guard. He’s an excellent low post scorer. Nuggets have nobody who can guard him. Give him the ball.
  • Fish brings it up, to Rad, to Pau, He faces up Nene, drives left, draws the foul.
  • Pau needs to go to the hook shot or turnaround over Nene. Nene is quick enough and good enough to cause problems on Pau’s penetration.
  • Pau had 18 in the first half. Hasn’t scored in the third until the second FT after that foul
  • Charging foul on Nene
  • Nene has 5 fouls. Camby, Melo and Odom have four fouls.
  • Fourth Quarter
  • Lakers lead 80-77. Kobe on the bench.
  • Offensive foul Najera
  • Mbenga offensive foul
  • 11 minutes to go
  • Nuggets season on the line here. I don’t think they’ll pull it out, still too much one-on-one basketball.
  • Odom ran the length of the court and hit the layup
  • Iverson replies by doing the same thing but one ups him by getting the foul plus the basket
  • Kleiza misses the three
  • Denver miss another three
  • Vujacic hits a three
  • Lots of quick threes. This is offending my eyes. Play with some intelligence guys. Marv Albert “this is not pretty basketball to start the fourth”
  • Offensive foul JR Smith
  • Carmelo with another three. Thank goodness the offensive rebound fell to Kleiza who was eight feet from the rim and put it back up
  • Najera passes up a layup, some ball movement, Carmelo through to the rim, missed the layup
  • Kobe to the rim, no good, no foul either
  • Outlet pass from Melo to Kleiza. Bounce pass the length of the court.
  • Tied at 85 with 6 to play
  • Odom beats Kleiza in the post, scored the layup, got the foul
  • Smith forces the three for no reason. Kobe had his arms straight up. Foul anyway. He’ll shoot three FTs. He hits all three. He’s been brilliant throughout this series.
  • Gasol goes at Camby, Camby blocks it
  • Bryant forces the fadeaway over Martin. Oh that was nice. Great defense by Kenyon, Kobe should made a tough shot.
  • Fisher misses the 17 footer, Camby with the defensive rebound
  • Offensive foul Kenyon
  • Gasol to Kobe, three pointer, he hits it
  • Iverson misses a three, rebound Bryant, he dribbles it up the court, takes Smith, drives right, spins left, finishes with a lefty layup off the glass over Camby and gets the foul. He misses the FT. Five point game. Four minutes to go.
  • Smith hits a 28 footer
  • Kobe had gone 17 minutes without a field goal until moments ago
  • Great defense by Martin again, Kobe throws a cross court pass, Smith in the passing lane, steals the ball, fastbreak going the other, Smith is going to take it, Odom challenges it, he fouls Smith, Smith hits the layup, gets the foul, hits the FT. He has 26 points now. Nuggets up 1.
  • Kobe from 22 feet over Kenyon. Big shot.
  • Anthony, turnover, great D by Walton, active hands.
  • Walton for three in the corner. Lakers up four. There’s two and a half to play. Timeout Denver.
  • Iverson takes it up court, dribbles for 12 seconds, then passes. Offensive foul on Kenyon. Turnover. Kenyon has fouled out.
  • Kobe has it for LA, drives by, loses the ball, passes to Walton to Gasol, steal Denver. They go the other way. Smith takes a 26 footer and comes up short with 12 seconds on the shot clock. A really poor shot to take, most of Denver’s shots this quarter have been very poorly chosen.
  • Fisher to Gasol in the high post, Kobe collects it, pulls out, shoots over Melo, miss. Offensive rebound Odom. Kobe holds it up top, drives on Melo, Anthony fouls, that’s his sixth, he’s outta here. Bryant hits 1 of 2. Lakers up five with a little over a minute to play.
  • Nene in for Melo
  • Iverson lets the ball bobble upcourt. He dribbles for 10 seconds, comes back dribbles it again, another 7 seconds of dribbling, takes a contested three. Odom rebounds, slips out of his hands and right to Nene, dunk.
  • Kobe up top, Nene traps him, Kobe drives by, he banks the runner in over Camby again. He has 29 points 6 assists and 7 rebounds now. Lakers back up 5. Timeout.
  • Camby shoots the three from the corner and makes it
  • Kobe dribbles the length of the court, passes off to Odom, oh lovely pass by Odom to Gasol for the dunk Four point Laker lead
  • 20 second timeout Denver
  • Kobe has 12 in the fourth
  • Kobe steals Nene’s pass intended for Smith. Foul. Nene has fouled out. Kobe only 2-6 from the line tonight. He hits both when it matters most.

This is over. Lakers sweep. The second round and a likely matchup with the Utah Jazz awaits.

The Nuggets have become the first 50 win team in NBA History to be swept in the first round
