Lakers vs Hornets

In Game Log / Recap on April 12, 2008 at 3:50 am

This here is the game of the day. I’m really looking forward to this one. The top seeds in the West vying for home court throughout the West. The top MVP candidates. Should be good.

  • The Lakers have looked disheveled lately. The injuries to Gasol and Walton have hurt LA’s rhythm defensively. They have to get back in order and start communicating out on the court.
  • The Lakers have great commentators. Meyer always looks like he’s been dubbed whenever the camera gets a close up. Stu Lantz is great too.
  • Pau wins the tip
  • Tyson picks up an early foul on Gasol off the ball
  • I don’t know why but the way this game has started reminds of the Jazz vs the Lakers in the playoffs back in 1987. Just the way the players are moving, the music, the atmosphere, the overall quality and execution of the team.
  • Kobe dances his way to the hoop to put LA up 4
  • Oh nice lob pass by Paul to Tyson. Wow Tyson made that more difficult than it was trying to engineer a reverse slam off the lob. Looked nice.
  • Kobe drops a lovely assist down the baseline to Fish
  • Tyson tripped up Radmanovic. Probably not on purpose. Rad comes right back down and throws the forearm right into Chandler’s chest. Technical. Well that set an aggressive tone.
  • Peja hit a three on the possession before. LA have to do a better job on him than he did earlier in the season. He killed them in an earlier contest. How many threes did he have that night? Somewhere between 8 and 11 I think.
  • Tyson picks up his second. He bumped Fish on the screen and roll defense. Tyson is pissed. He needs to calm down. Lakers starting to get in his head, or maybe it’s the refs.
  • Fish to Lamar for the dunk. 12-7 LA lead.
  • Lakers looking very good here in the opening period.
  • Mo Pete with a long two. He’s important tonight, he’ll be guarding Kobe. He plays Kobe pretty hard but for some reason Kobe just gets hot whenever he sees Mo in front of him. Let’s just say Kobe knows how to play against Mo Pete. The Hornets must feel a bit off about signing one of Kobe’s personal whipping boys, they do realize they’re in the West don’t they?
  • Radmanovic travels. 14-9 LA lead with 5 to play in the first
  • Gasol blocks Paul’s driving shot. Fisher hits the floater on the other end.
  • Lamar is a beast on the boards. Pau Gasol has freed him to do so much more. Lovely interior pass by Odom off the board to Gasol for a layup. Pau was fouled and hits two at the line.
  • Lamar on the drive and now he’ll go to the line. 20-11 LA lead with two Odom FTs. He hits both
  • Lakers are taking it right to the rim with Tyson Chandler on the bench
  • Kobe sneaks up behind of David West and rips it from his chest. Throws it ahead to Fish who lays it to the trailing Pau Gasol for the easy two. 12-2 run by LA. They look sharp.
  • Back pick by Hilton Armstrong 40 feet from the rim and he moves on the pick. Foul.
  • Lamar back to the line for 2 more. 28-14 LA lead
  • Hornets bench coming here. Pargo and Bonzi.
  • 13-3 on the glass. Lakers killing them.
  • Gasol loses the dribble, falls back to 20 feet to get control of the ball. Crosses Armstrong over and takes it right to the rim. And1.
  • Farmar and Walton came in for LA a few moments ago
  • 36-18 off a Kobe three over Peja who’s defending Kobe now
  • Another three from Kobe. 39-20 Lakers lead
  • The Lakers announcers are astounded to see Peja on Kobe. Peja has been guarding the opponent’s best wing a lot recently. Peja’s defense has improved a lot over the years. Still, Kobe should be able to take him off the dribble whenever he wants.
  • End of the first
  • Lamar back to the FT line. He drew a blocking foul on Melvin Ely. 42-20 Lakers lead with two FTs coming. 2 minutes into the second. Odom hits one. 7-8 from the line now.
  • 19-5 rebounding advantage for LA
  • Ronny picks up the foul. He was moving, good call. But he was defending Chandler smartly. He tried to force Chandler to his left and cheated onto his right hand. Chandler only has a few move and no counters. He looked confused. Lucky he got a call, otherwise that probably wouldn’t have ended well for Tyson.
  • Becks is at a Laker game. Wierd sight. Still muddling through his words. Nice to see you Becks.
  • There’s that charging call after the pass again, the call that the LA announcer hates
  • ‘Julian Wright out of control’ yes he was. Nice pass to Chandler to bail himself out. All that dribbling that was going nowhere, don’t do that again Jules. He just bagged a three, he made up for it.
  • 53-29 Lakers lead. LA are shooting 62%. Their offense has so many weapons, the Lakers are moving the ball and moving bodies extremely well tonight. The Hornets have no hopes of stopping LA, they can’t load up on anyone because the ball is moving too quickly. Having Lamar and Pau on either post makes for a good post offense.
  • Lovely seal by Walton. Bounce pass on the baseline by Fish and the reverse from Walton.
  • Paul blazes down the court, draws all the defenders to him skies to the rim for the finish and then just lays it off to Pargo for the uncontested layup. Lovely play.
  • 65-39 Laker lead
  • David West drops an 18 footer. 2 minutes to go.
  • Lakers spacing offensively has been superb. Lakers starting to lose some focus. New Orleans need to try and get a 8-0 run going on here to cut the lead a bit before halftime.
  • Kobe just picked up his third and will sit the rest of the half
  • Chandler picks up his 3rd
  • Great challenge by Pau. Chris Paul drove the hoop, Pau rotates over jumps backwards and throws his arms up in the air. Paul couldn’t see the rim or get any contact. Missed the shot. Nice play.
  • Paul has 5 points and 7 assists in the first. Hits two FTs to make it 7 and 7.
  • Hornets have shaved 10 points off the Lakers lead.
  • 65-45 Laker lead. Halftime.

Let’s take a halftime break here

  • 4-0 run by the Hornets to start the period. Radmanovic just took LA’s 23rd three point attempt, that’s too much too early.
  • Paul with two nice steals. Another bucket for New Orleans.
  • LA’s intensity fell off late in the second. They have to re-group. Kobe or Fish need to make sure they get a close shot. Too many long jumpers.
  • West hits another J. 8-0 run.
  • Fisher hits a shot at the shot clock buzzer to stop the run
  • Paul with another steal. Lead down to a dozen off the ensuing layup
  • Great bounce pass through traffic on the break ahead of the cut before Mo even began cutting to the hoop, he was still running around and behind the Laker defender, and an easy layup. 10 point lead.
  • Lovely cut off the ball by Chris Paul. He backdoored Fish for a layup.
  • Peja stole the entry pass into the post to Odom. Up the other way and Mo Pete nails a three.
  • Turnover. Paul leads the break and leads right on up there to Chandler for the dunk. 5 point lead.
  • Hornets defense has picked up
  • Odom took a three when Kobe had Paul in the post. Bad recognition.
  • 4 point Laker lead.
  • Tyson Chandler just picked up his fourth. Good drive by Pau. Chandler’s D has been a huge difference this quarter.
  • Lakers getting behind their team. Loud MVP chants with Kobe heading to the line. 18 points now for KB8
  • Paul misses a runner but Chandler slams it home
  • Kobe back to the line and he draws the fourth on Chris Paul. Great recognition. Refused to take the open three and attacked the open space betwen the three point line to below the FT line.
  • Paul has 7 dimes in the quarter. 11 and 14 now for the game. His steals have been huge in the quarter. He has at least 3.
  • David West bricks a three badly. On the other end Chandler and West combine to block Odom.
  • 82-73 after a lovely dish from Kobe to Pau
  • David West picks up an offensive foul after lowering the shoulder
  • Paul splits the double and knocks down the floater
  • Lakers had zero movement in the third quarter. Offense was stagnant. Players weren’t moving. Ball wasn’t moving. Lots of one-on-one play, mostly from Kobe and Derek. They gotta get back together and stay composed. Run your offense.

End of Three. Lakers up 8.

  • Kobe hits his 23rd point of the night for a 10 point lead.
  • Kobe sets up Farmar for a three.
  • Kobe falls asleep and gives Bonzi an easy bucket.
  • Kobe with a double clutch reverse dunk. The rebound fell loose and bounced right to Kobe with nobody in the way to the paint. 92-77 Lakers lead.
  • Pargo hit a jump shot over Gasol. Now that shot had arc.
  • Peja hits a three. Lead down to 10. Peja has 15
  • The Lakers are shooting way too many threes. Sasha of all people took it to the rim instead of shooting the three or passing to the open shooters on the wing. Good take. Lakers needed to get some points on the board.
  • 32 attempts from downtown tonight, hit 8
  • 93-84 LA lead
  • Chris Paul just picked up his fifth. He hacks more than any other player in the league. Refs let him get away with so much. Paul goes to the bench
  • Farmar misses another three
  • 93-87. Lakers ball. Farmar almost lost it on the fast break. Lucky to hold onto possession. He was out of control and didn’t have numbers. Six and a half left to play.
  • Tyson Chandler picks up his fifth
  • Bonzi with the steal after Walton blew a layup
  • Sasha hits a big there to stop a 12-1 run, Paul still on the bench
  • Peja replies with a three of his own
  • Farmar just dribbled the ball for 14 seconds and forced an off balance fadeway falling to the left one hand heave from 17 feet. Smart play there Jordan.
  • Turiaf misses a layup. Gets the board though and resets the offense.
  • Peja over Lamar with another three. He just caught the ball. Held the ball. Pivoted around, a jab step or two. Then rose up and drained a three in Lamar’s face. Everybody in the building knew he was taking that shot and they still couldn’t stop him. Lamar isn’t the type of defender needed for Peja. They need a quick pest that’ll get under him while he shoots. Like Rick Fox used to. Lamar is a better defender for bigger players and players that spend more time inside the arc. Peja is 6-10 from downtown now, 9-15 from the field for 24 points.
  • Lakers still not passing the ball well
  • Nice drive and kick from Kobe to Fisher for the three. Seriously can you stop shooting threes? I know it went in but please. You’re missing. A lot. You’re missing a lot.
  • Fish knocks the ball loose. Turnover
  • Kobe heading to the line. 2:39 left in the game. Lakers up 6. 101-96.
  • Lakers win the division title if they win tonight and bring themselves within a half game of the best record in the conference which is held by New Orleans.
  • Kobe makes 1 of 2
  • Gasol comes over to help Odom and blocks David West’s runner
  • Lamar steals a lazy hand off
  • Pargo hits the two. 102-97.
  • Lakers haven’t gotten a good look the last two possessions
  • Lovely possession by LA. Kobe had the ball with 8 seconds on the shot clock, got double teamed so he kicked the ball over to the other side of the court to Fisher. New Orleans rotate out. Fisher throws a nice bounce pass to the post to an open Gasol and Gasol knocks down a right handed jump hook from 6 feet. Two points. 104-97
  • West with a quick two. A jumper off the screen and roll drive and kick from Paul
  • Kobe isolated one-on-one against Peja. He sweeps it low and blows right by Peja going left and gets mugged before he puts somebody on a poster. Knocks down both FTs
  • 106-99
  • Paul drives to the rim and gets fouled. 47 seconds to go. Paul hits both.
  • New Orleans play out the shot clock and get the stop. Fast break. Peja misses a tough three.
  • Kobe heading to the line for two with 6 seconds to go. Hit’s one. 29 points, 10 boards, 8 assists
  • Pargo hits a shot at the buzzer. He had 17 tonight.
  • Chris Paul has 15, 17, 6 and 4 steals
  • Some other numbers for New Orleans; Chandler had 18 points and 8 boards, David West had only 14 and 5.
  • Some other numbers for LA; Odom had 13 and 16, Gasol had 25 and 6, Fish had 15 and 6

Game to LA. They have a shot at the best record in the West now. Hornets need to drop a game though, LA have the tiebreaker.
