Rockets High on Motiejunas

In Draft on June 24, 2011 at 2:38 pm

A couple of quick quotes from Houston (link one and link two)

“We really like Marcus Morris. We think he was one of the top players in the draft, skilled at both ends,” Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said. “He can play the four or a power three, can defend two positions. We’re thrilled to get Motiejunas — really upside, really mobile, somebody already very skilled offensively. Has a great low-post game. Has a perimeter offensive game as well and can move his feet really well on the defensive end. Read the rest of this entry »

Three Team Deal — Maggette, Jacks and Salmons

In General NBA on June 23, 2011 at 6:37 pm

John Hollinger reports

In a baffling trade that will steer only more criticism toward the Kings’ much-maligned front office, Sacramento traded Beno Udrih and the No. 7 pick in the draft to Milwaukee for John Salmons and the No. 10 pick. The second part of this deal redirects the No. 7 pick to Charlotte along with Milwaukee’s Corey Maggette, with Stephen Jackson, Shaun Livingston and the 19th pick going back to the Bucks.

Check out the rest of Hollinger’s analysis. It’s a good read. Read the rest of this entry »

2011 Draft: Trade Rumours

In General NBA on June 22, 2011 at 6:44 pm

Some of the rumours I’ve seen over the day

Minnesota Timberwolves

  • The Wolves have been linked to both Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum separately. Each has been based around a package involving the #2 pick.

  • The Suns were linked twice. Once with Steve Nash for the #2 pick. The other time, Gortat + #13 pick for the #2 pick. Phoenix have since adamantly denied any interest in parting with either Nash or Gortat.
  • Roy Hibbert + the #15 pick for the #2 pick — can’t imagine that those talks went very far. Read the rest of this entry »

Link: LeBron’s Shot Distribution

In General NBA on June 19, 2011 at 7:42 pm

A decent look at LeBron’s shot distribution from Truehoop on ESPN

Areas of Shot Attempts

Method of analysis: Look at his percentage of FG attempts by distance (within 5 ft, 5-15 ft, 15+ FT) over the last four regular seasons.

Conclusion: James took a larger percentage of his shots from mid-range (17.2 percent), due to a steady decrease in shots within five feet (34.9 percent, down from 39.2 percent in 2007-08) and a sharp drop this season in long-range attempts (47.9 percent down from 52.9 percent the season before). Link: Article on Paul Allen (Blazers Owner)

In General NBA on June 18, 2011 at 6:49 pm

Interesting article on Paul Allen, the Portland Trailblazers owner.

Worth a quick read, good info on some of the duties of an owner. There is one line that I liked in particular.

“I’ve tried to strike a balance as team owner, to be involved and accountable while preserving my executives’ freedom to shape the roster. My job is oversight, not execution,” Allen wrote. “While I sign off on trades or free agents, I’ve rarely overruled my basketball people’s decisions. But I’m not shy about steering the discussion or pushing deeper if something doesn’t make sense to me.” Read the rest of this entry »

Good Read: Marcus Thornton / Tyreke Evans Dynamic

In General NBA on June 18, 2011 at 9:12 am

A good look, statistically, at the Tyreke Evans + Marcus Thornton dynamic in Sacramento over the close of last season.

I used Basketball Value to break down how the team did with an Evans/Thornton backcourt vs. a Udrih/Thornton backcourt.

There were five lineups that played at least 10 minutes together that had Evans at the point and Thornton at two-guard. These lineups accounted for 145 minutes of playing time. These lineups were outscored 301-330 by opponents, or 9.6 points per 48 minutes. These lineups had an offensive efficiency of 104 (below league average) and a defensive efficiency of 115 (far worse than the worst of the NBA), despite all but 14 of the minutes including Samuel Dalembert on the floor.
